Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs...
On a winter night in New York City in 1949, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, grabbed it in his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know that he had just met the muse who would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens to his new cat lover, whom he named Loco, and was so excited by the results that he began photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the beginning of an extraordinary career spanning seven decades.
Long before the internet and #catsofinstagram, Chandoha thrilled the public with his blurry motives. From advertising, greeting cards, jigsaw puzzles, to pet food packaging, his images combined true affection for the creatures, a distinctive work ethic, and immaculate technology. Chandhaa's distinctive, glamorous light, highlighting each cat's coat, would determine the visual vocabulary of animal portraits for generations and inspire masters like Andy Warhol, who are guided by Chandoha's enchanting portraits in his illustrated cat book The archives of this genre-defining artist include color studio and environmental portraits Black and white street photography, pictures of vintage cat shows, delicate pictures that combine his kids with cats and more. This is not just a fitting tribute to these beguiling creatures, but also to a remarkable photographer who died this year at the age of 98. and whose compassion is felt in every frame.
